Fan Death

Fan death is an urban legend that originated in South Korea, but has since spread to other countries in the Far East. The belief is that an electric fan, if left running overnight in a closed room, can result in the death (by suffocation, poisoning, or hypothermia) of those inside. This belief also extends to air conditioners and the fans in cars. When the air conditioner or fan is on in a car, some people are apt to leave their car windows open a crack to avoid "fan death." Fans manufactured and sold in Korea are equipped with a timer switch that turns them off after a set number of minutes, which users are frequently urged to set when going to sleep with a fan on.

So many cool stuff !!!!

O wow Ive never heard of 'fan death' before. I leave my fan on overnight in a closed room all the time! This isnt good...Thanks for the info!

ok. i think someone needs to define "urban legend" to these people.

Author and academic Rudy Rucker actually linked this article on his blog and discussed it. He even claimed to suffer from it mildly (but I think he really meant discomfort from forced air). He also discussed another type of mass hysteria called Penis Panic which is even more fascinating.

I'm sad to see this fan death article scheduled for deletion.

Nah, let's just laugh at their crass stupidity - assholes!

I just read about this yesterday for the first time. I checked this blog at random tonight and suddenly I've stumbled across it again. This is too wierd.

my dad used to tell me that growing up!

so ridiculous...

(i'm korean)

I've spent years with the fan on overnight in a closed room. This is simply a myth. Intresting still, but a myth nonetheless.

Wow. You really dig into really interesting things in Wikipedia!

Never heard of fan death. Sounds a bit like superstition to me.

Further proof that no matter how idiotic an idea sounds, there will still be thousands if not millions of people who swallow it and tell others, "no really...it's true!"

Except for Bigfoot, of course. We all know deep down that he's real.

Go here for an interesting and factual article on fan death.
